A business challenge
The EU challenges for Norwegian business are plentiful and growing. Norway’s EU policy is not primarily aimed at improving conditions for individual companies. This is a responsibility largely left to the companies themselves. The fact that EU directives, despite the country not being a member of the union, in most cases end up as part of Norwegian legislation remains quite unobserved in Norway. Also going forward political processes and decision in the EU will influence Norwegian companies. The transformation of the EEA agreement to a, for all practical purposes, bilateral agreement will reinforce this development even further. Seen against this backdrop, it is imperative for a large number of Norwegian companies to know their future as it is being shaped by the European Union.
Potential for influence
Experience demonstrates that Norwegian companies are able to exercise influence on the EU system, despite Norway remaining outside the union. Strong industrial arguments and solutions oriented approaches which are aligned with the EU’s political priorities will in many cases create significant possibilities and influence.
